Without going on a rant about greenwashing, it is unsurprising that trust in advertising is down, as it is in businesses in general. People don’t trust brands like they used to. At the same time brand loyalty is more important than ever for companies, because it’s becoming more expensive to acquire new customers.
Ethical marketing seeks to promote honesty, fairness, and responsibility in all communications. It’s not a strategy but a philosophy, if that doesn’t sound too nauseating.
But it builds trust and trust builds loyalty. At a time when transparency is being demanded of brands, honesty and openness in your communications will be well received.
We are very aware of the influence that marketers have on the world. We influence where people spend their money, what they consume, and which companies they support.
And, with this power comes responsibility. So in 2020 we took the somewhat scary decision to clear our client ledger of anyone that we didn’t believe in, and set out to work with clients that aligned with our social and environmental values.
We have since become experts in this space.

A 2021 report by Deloitte found that almost a third of consumers were ‘highly engaged’ in adopting a more sustainable lifestyle.
And we can see this on our high streets. Patagonia, Beyond Meat, TOMS Shoes, these brands are now household names. Not because their products are better or cheaper, but because people are making buying decisions based on personal values.
Empowered by more choice and more information, customers are now firmly in control of the relationships with brands. They are demanding honesty and authenticity from brands, expectations are high and their demand for transparency is growing daily.
